The 2022 election: 600 days to go

Every
election season, AEI’s Political Corner compiles and regularly updates a list
of Senate and governors’ contests. Today marks 600 days before the November
2022 elections, but it isn’t too early to scan the contests and make
preliminary assessments of the races to watch. For each contest this year,
we include the year in which the incumbent was first elected, the age of the
incumbent, and Donald Trump’s 2020 margin in each state. We also include the
names of candidates who are term-limited for governors’ races. Finally, there
is an overview of the contests.

Thus far, five senators have announced their retirement, and we will watching these open seat contests especially closely, as they are usually more competitive than races with an incumbent. All are Republicans, and no Democrat has yet announced retirement. The Republicans currently have 20 seats on the ballot in the Senate to the Democrats’ 14, so the Republicans are more vulnerable to begin, and retirements may add to that vulnerability. These contests are especially important in a 50-50 Senate.
